The making of an Aari shawl

Many hands. One shawl.

From carefully chosen fabric to its final presentation, follow the eight stages behind a hand-embroidered Aari shawl.

  1. Fabric

    Fabric selected

Fine fabric is carefully selected as the foundation for each shawl.

  2. Colour

    Threads meet colour

The Rangrez dyes the threads in the colours chosen for the design.

  3. Sketch

    Drawn by the Naqash

The Naqash sketches the pattern, shaping the motifs that will adorn the shawl.

  4. Trace

    Traced onto fabric

The pattern is carefully traced onto the fabric, creating a guide for the Aari embroidery.

  5. Handwork

    Aari, worked by hand

With a small hooked needle, the artisan links one chain stitch to the next, following the traced design by hand.

  6. Finish

    Washed and pressed

The embroidered shawl is washed and pressed, preparing it for its final inspection.

  7. Inspection

    Every detail checked

The embroidery, loose threads and overall finish are carefully checked before packing.

  8. Presentation

    Wrapped with care

The finished shawl is nestled in a hand-embroidered Kashmiri bag, ready to be dispatched.
