Vacuum gently with low suction and without a rotating brush. Avoid catching the fringes, and rotate the carpet occasionally to distribute wear.
Spills & cleaning
Blot spills promptly with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub, soak or steam-clean. For a thorough clean or persistent stain, use a professional silk-carpet cleaner.
Placement & storage
Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight and damp areas. A suitable rug pad helps reduce movement. For storage, roll the carpet and keep it in a dry, ventilated place.

A pattern becomes a language.
The design is translated into Talim: a written guide to colours and knot counts. The weaver follows it row by row.
The marks shown here suggest the rhythm of Talim; they are an illustration, not a weaving instruction.

Silk takes on the palette.
Silk yarn is dyed, dried and wound. The prepared colours are kept within reach, ready for each hand-tied knot.
The silk that forms the soft surface is the pile yarn. Its colour is carried into the carpet knot by knot.

A foundation under tension.
Silk warp threads are stretched on an upright loom. The artisan keeps them evenly tensioned to support the knotted pile.
In silk-on-silk construction, the pile and the lengthwise warp are silk. The crosswise binding weft may be a different fibre.

The pattern is tied by hand.
The weaver ties silk around one warp and behind its neighbour. Each asymmetric knot is tightened by hand; its cut ends form the pile.
This enlarged front-view schematic shows the knot’s path. Repeated across a row, the knots build both the surface and the design.

Each row is secured.
Binding weft is passed between the warp threads, then a hand-held comb packs the row down. This rhythm repeats as the carpet grows.
The animation slows down the crosswise weft passes, then the downward action of the comb. The weft is distinct from the silk pile.

The silk reveals its character.
Skilled hands trim the pile and finish the edges and fringes. Washing and drying bring out the pattern and silk’s changing sheen.
Finishing is shown as a group of operations. Trimming may also happen during weaving, and the order of finishing steps can vary.

Our grandfather, together with his brothers, carried the family’s work beyond Kashmir. They travelled across India, including Allahabad and Varanasi, introducing Kashmiri craftsmanship to customers far beyond the Valley and building relationships across the country.

Our father and his brother worked alongside our grandfather from the ground up, helping shape every part of the business. They expanded manufacturing, built a strong wholesale presence in the local Kashmiri market, and established the family business as a trusted and respected name in Kashmir.
