Follow the making of a hand Aari scarf, from carefully chosen fabric and a printed pattern to linked chain stitches and the final finishing touches.

Fabric is selected and prepared as the foundation for a softly draping scarf.
A palette of thread
Thread colours are chosen to bring depth, contrast and character to the floral design.
Drawn by the Naqash
The Naqash draws the floral motifs, arranging the pattern for the scarf’s long, narrow shape.
Chapai — the pattern transferred
The motif is lightly transferred onto the fabric, creating a guide for the artisan’s Aari hook.
Aari, worked by hand
A small hooked Aari needle draws thread through the fabric, linking one chain stitch to the next by hand.
Carefully finished
After embroidery, the scarf is carefully finished and pressed with attention to its fabric and raised threadwork.
Every detail checked
The embroidery, loose threads and edges are inspected before the scarf is prepared for packing.

Our great-grandfather began working with Kashmir’s master craftsmen around 150 years ago, beginning a family relationship with Kashmiri craft that continues to this day.
Our Grand Father & his brothers
Peerzada Bashir-Ud-Din
Our grandfather, together with his brothers, carried the family’s work beyond Kashmir. They travelled across India, including Allahabad and Varanasi, introducing Kashmiri craftsmanship to customers far beyond the Valley and building relationships across the country.

Peerzada Naseer Ahmad
Our father and his brother worked alongside our grandfather from the ground up, helping shape every part of the business. They expanded manufacturing, built a strong wholesale presence in the local Kashmiri market, and established the family business as a trusted and respected name in Kashmir.
Fourth Generation

Today, the fourth generation carries the family’s work forward through KashmKari. Building on the relationships, craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through our family, we are taking Kashmiri craft directly to customers around the world while continuing to work with artisans here in Kashmir.
