The making of a Hand Aari poncho

Many hands. One poncho.

From pure wool to final presentation, follow the stages behind a hand Aari–embroidered Kashmiri poncho.

  1. Fabric

    Pure wool selected

Pure wool is chosen for its warmth, breathability and natural drape.

  2. Colour

    Threads meet colour

The Rangrez dyes the threads in the colours chosen for the embroidery.

  3. Sketch

    Drawn by the Naqash

The Naqash draws the pattern, shaping the motifs that will define the finished piece.

  4. Trace

    Traced onto fabric

The design is transferred onto the wool, creating a careful guide for the handwork.

  5. Handwork

    Aari embroidered by hand

Using a small hooked Aari tool, a Kashmiri artisan follows the traced design and forms each chain stitch by hand.

  6. Finish

    Finished for its drape

Once the embroidery is complete, the wool is carefully finished, washed and pressed so the poncho falls with an easy drape.

  7. Inspection

    Every detail checked

The embroidery, edges and overall finish are checked carefully before the piece is packed.

  8. Presentation

    Wrapped with care

The finished poncho is placed in a hand-embroidered Kashmiri bag, ready to be dispatched.

Our Family Archive

A 150-Year Family Legacy

Our Great-Grandfather

Peerzada Saif-Ud-Din

Our great-grandfather began working with Kashmir’s master craftsmen around 150 years ago, beginning a family relationship with Kashmiri craft that continues to this day.

Our Grand Father & his brothers

Peerzada Bashir-Ud-Din

Our grandfather, together with his brothers, carried the family’s work beyond Kashmir. They travelled across India, including Allahabad and Varanasi, introducing Kashmiri craftsmanship to customers far beyond the Valley and building relationships across the country.

Our Father & his brother

Peerzada Naseer Ahmad

Our father and his brother worked alongside our grandfather from the ground up, helping shape every part of the business. They expanded manufacturing, built a strong wholesale presence in the local Kashmiri market, and established the family business as a trusted and respected name in Kashmir.

Fourth Generation

Noumaan & Hamees

Today, the fourth generation carries the family’s work forward through KashmKari. Building on the relationships, craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through our family, we are taking Kashmiri craft directly to customers around the world while continuing to work with artisans here in Kashmir.
